Quick answer

In the Semrush vs Similarweb decision, start with the job you need done. Semrush calls itself "the unified SEO and AI search solution" [1], so it suits teams whose daily work is keywords, rankings and site fixes. Similarweb pitches "AI-Powered Digital Data" across web, app, sales, retail and stock intelligence products [2], so it suits teams that need to size markets and benchmark competitors' traffic. Semrush's entry SEO plan lists at $139 monthly [3], while Similarweb's entry Web Intelligence plan lists at $199 monthly or $125 per month billed annually [4].

The two products used to sit in clearly separate lanes. They now overlap: Semrush sells a Traffic & Market toolkit for competitor traffic research, and Similarweb sells a package that adds keyword research, rank tracking and site audits. The overlap is real, but each tool is still strongest at the job it started with, and the pricing reflects that.

How we chose

We compared the two tools a buyer would weigh for this decision, plus Ahrefs as a third option that SEO-first teams often consider. Everything below comes from each vendor's own homepage, pricing page and data or feature pages, checked on November 8, 2026. We did not run hands-on tests or open paid accounts, so this is a comparison of what each company publishes, not a performance review. Prices are list prices in US dollars as shown on those pages and can change.

Semrush vs Similarweb at a glance

Product Best for Starting price Notable
Semrush SEO and AI search work: keywords, rank tracking, site audits $139 monthly, or $117.33/mo billed annually (SEO plan) [3] Free plan with 10 reports per day [3]; market data sold as a separate toolkit at $289/mo billed annually [5]
Similarweb Competitor traffic, market research and benchmarking $199 monthly, or $125/mo billed annually (Competitive Intelligence) [4] SEO tools start on the $399 monthly plan [4]; separate app, sales, retail and stock products [2]
Ahrefs SEO-first teams that want backlink and crawl data $129/mo (Lite) [6] Traffic reports add-on at $99/mo [6]

Semrush vs Similarweb data: where the numbers come from

Both tools estimate traffic for websites you do not own, so the source of those estimates matters more than any single feature.

Similarweb describes four inputs on its data page [7]. "Website & App Owners" covers data "directly measured through first party analytics (e.g. Google Analytics)". The "Contributors Network" is "anonymous traffic data collected from Similarweb products installed on millions of devices". "Public Data" covers sources such as Wikipedia and census data, and "Partnerships" covers data from partners including ISPs and measurement companies. Similarweb says it extrapolates "the tens of billions of digital signals gathered each day" into its picture of online traffic [7].

Semrush's market data comes from its Traffic & Market toolkit, which it says "is built on a 200M+ panelist clickstream" from "hundreds of data providers in 190+ countries", with data going back to 2017 [8]. Semrush also says its approach uses "real panelist behavioral data, not the modeled estimates most tools rely on" [8]. Treat that as Semrush's own claim about its method.

The practical takeaway: both numbers are estimates for third-party sites, and they will not match your own analytics exactly. Similarweb's pricing FAQ links to an explanation of "potential discrepancies versus Google Analytics data" [4]. Use either tool for direction and relative comparisons, and use your own analytics for your own site.

On Semrush vs Similarweb organic data specifically, the bigger difference is which plan unlocks it. Semrush includes basic keyword research and Position Tracking in its entry SEO plan [3], while Similarweb adds Organic Search Overview, Keyword Research and Rank Tracker only from its Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO plan upward [4].

Semrush — the SEO and AI search toolkit

Semrush (image: semrush.com)
Semrush (image: semrush.com)

Semrush is built around search visibility: finding keywords, tracking rankings, auditing sites and, more recently, tracking how brands show up in AI answers. Its market research features live in a separate toolkit with its own price.

Verified features: Semrush lists a database of 29B keywords, 43T backlinks and 142 geo databases [1]. The entry SEO plan includes Position Tracking and Site Audit, with 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily [3]. The Traffic & Market toolkit shows how traffic is split "across channels including AI, organic, paid, social, email, and display for any domain" and lets you benchmark "up to 100 domains side by side" [8].

Pricing: The SEO plan is $139 monthly or $117.33/mo billed annually. Starter (SEO + AI Search) is $199 monthly and adds 50 AI prompts tracked daily. Pro+ is $299 monthly with 15 websites and 1,500 tracked keywords. Advanced is custom [3]. A free plan at $0/mo includes "10 reports per day across all vital tools" [3]. The Traffic & Market toolkit is priced separately: its Pro plan is $289/mo billed annually [5]. Additional users start at $45/mo [3]. Semrush offers a seven-day free trial [1].

Strengths: Semrush is the more natural fit when organic search is the main channel. The SEO plan costs less per month than Similarweb's first plan that includes SEO tools, and there is a free tier for light use.

Limitations: Competitor traffic and market data are not in the SEO plans; they cost extra through the Traffic & Market toolkit, so a team that wants both pays for two products inside one account. Extra seats also add cost.

Best fit: Founders, small marketing teams and agencies whose main goal is ranking content and tracking keywords, who want some competitor research on the side.

Similarweb — market and competitor intelligence

Similarweb (image: similarweb.com)
Similarweb (image: similarweb.com)

Similarweb is built around measuring digital markets: how much traffic competitors get, where it comes from and how a whole category is moving. SEO, ad and AI visibility tools are layered on top in higher plans.

Verified features: Similarweb's product menu covers Web, App, Sales, Retail and Stock Intelligence [2]. The entry Competitive Intelligence plan includes Website Performance analysis, Traffic and Engagement metrics, Customer Demographics, Marketing Channels Overview and Competitor Alerts [4]. The custom business package offers up to 37 months of historical data, coverage of 100+ countries, APIs, MCP for AI workflows and SSO [4].

Pricing: Competitive Intelligence is $199 monthly or $125 per month billed annually, with 1 user seat and 3 months of historical data; SEO, AEO and ad intelligence are not included [4]. Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO is $399 monthly or $333 billed annually and adds Organic Search Overview, Keyword Research, Rank Tracker, Site Audit and Backlinks, plus 150 tracked AI prompts and 6 months of history [4]. The plan that adds ad intelligence is $649 monthly or $542 billed annually [4]. Business and enterprise pricing is quote-based [4]. A free trial is available "on self-service plans" [4].

Strengths: Similarweb is the broader market research tool. It publishes how it collects data, covers apps and other channels beyond the web, and offers enterprise data feeds and APIs for teams that want to pipe the data into their own systems.

Limitations: The entry plan has no SEO tools and only 3 months of history on a single seat [4]. For SEO work, Similarweb's first plan with keyword research and rank tracking ($399 monthly) costs more than Semrush's Pro+ plan ($299 monthly) [3, 4]. The API is sold through custom packages or as a standalone product through sales, with no listed price [4]. The free data on its public site is "a high-level sample" of the platform [4].

Best fit: Researchers, analysts, investors and growth teams who need to size a market, benchmark competitors or track category trends, more than they need day-to-day SEO execution.

Ahrefs — a third option for SEO-first teams

Ahrefs (image: ahrefs.com)
Ahrefs (image: ahrefs.com)

Ahrefs is the other name most buyers weigh against Semrush. Its tagline is "Make your business discoverable—in search, AI, and beyond" [9].

Verified features: The Lite plan includes 6 months of historical data and 750 tracked keywords [6].

Pricing: Lite is $129/mo, Standard $249/mo and Advanced $449/mo, each with 1 user included [6]. A Traffic reports add-on is $99/mo, and Traffic & Market reports are listed as "Soon" at $299/mo [6].

Strengths: SEO is its core product, so it is worth a look if backlinks and site crawling matter more to you than market research.

Limitations: Competitor traffic data is an add-on, and the market-level reports were not yet available on the pricing page we checked [6].

Best fit: SEO-led teams that care most about backlinks and crawl data and need only light traffic research.

How to choose between Similarweb and Semrush

Start with the question you ask most often.

  • "How do we rank for more searches?" Pick Semrush. Keyword research, rank tracking and site audits are in every paid plan, and the entry price is lower than Similarweb's first SEO-capable plan.
  • "How big is this market, and who is winning it?" Pick Similarweb. Market sizing and competitor traffic are its core product, and its data methodology is documented.
  • "We need both." Compare the totals. Semrush's SEO plan plus its Traffic & Market Pro toolkit is $139 monthly plus $289/mo billed annually [3, 5]. Similarweb's Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO plan bundles both for $399 monthly [4]. Some teams instead run Similarweb and Semrush side by side, one for market data and one for SEO execution.
  • "We are SEO-first on a tight budget." Look at Semrush's free plan or Ahrefs Lite before paying for market intelligence.

Whichever tool you pick, the data is most useful when it reaches the people who act on it. If you want competitor traffic signals or keyword data flowing into your pipeline and sales workflows, our GTM engineering team builds those connections, and a custom CRM can store that data next to your accounts instead of in a separate tab.

FAQ

Is Similarweb vs Semrush a fair comparison for traffic data?

Yes, because both now sell competitor traffic estimates, though from different sources. Similarweb blends first-party analytics, a contributors network, public data and partner data [7]. Semrush's Traffic & Market toolkit is built on what it calls "a 200M+ panelist clickstream" [8]. Both are estimates for sites you do not own.

How does Similarweb get its data?

Similarweb lists four sources: data from website and app owners measured through first-party analytics, anonymous traffic data from Similarweb products installed on millions of devices, public data, and data from partners such as ISPs and measurement companies [7]. It says it then extrapolates billions of daily signals into traffic estimates [7].

What does Similarweb pricing look like?

Similarweb's self-service Web Intelligence plans run from $199 monthly ($125/mo billed annually) for Competitive Intelligence, to $399 monthly with SEO and AEO tools, to $649 monthly with ad intelligence [4]. Business and enterprise packages are quote-based [4].

Does Similarweb have a free trial?

Yes. Similarweb lists a free trial as available on self-service plans [4]. Semrush offers a seven-day free trial [1] and also has a $0 free plan [3].

Is Ahrefs a good Similarweb alternative?

Only partly. Ahrefs is mainly an SEO platform, with plans from $129/mo [6]. It sells traffic reports as a $99/mo add-on, and its broader Traffic & Market reports were marked "Soon" on its pricing page [6]. For full market research, Similarweb or Semrush's Traffic & Market toolkit are closer matches.

Our recommendation

If search is your main growth channel, choose Semrush: it covers SEO work at a lower entry price and lets you add market data later. If you need to understand a whole market, benchmark competitors or feed traffic data into research and investment decisions, choose Similarweb, accepting that its SEO tools cost more than Semrush's. Use the free trials on both before committing to an annual plan.
